Change (August 2026): SeatingSnap now has optional accounts. If you create one, your charts — student names included — are backed up to our database so they follow you between devices. Signed out, nothing changes: your data still never leaves your browser. The sections below spell out both cases.
Correction (August 2026):an earlier version of this page said our analytics were “Plausible or similar.” That was wrong — we use PostHog, and have throughout. Our data practices did not change; the description of them was inaccurate, and the section below now names the tool we actually run.

The short version

Student names and chart data stay in your browser. We don't collect them, store them on our servers, or sell them. Two things are exceptions, and you choose both: sharing a chart by link stores it for 30 days and then deletes it, and creating an account backs your charts up so they follow you between devices. Without an account, nothing you type ever leaves your device.

What we collect

SeatingSnap is designed to collect as little as possible.

  • Chart data (local only):Your seating charts, student names, and desk layouts are stored in your browser's localStorage and IndexedDB. This data never leaves your device during normal use.
  • Shared charts (temporary): If you generate a share link, the chart JSON is stored on our servers for up to 30 days, then automatically deleted. These records are not indexed, not searchable, and not linked to any user identity.
  • Your account (only if you make one): Your name, your email address, and a password we store only as a one-way hash — we cannot read it. Accounts are entirely optional. The seating chart tool is fully usable without one, and always will be.
  • Backed-up charts (only while signed in): Signing in copies your charts — including the student names in them — to our database, so they are there when you open SeatingSnap on another device. This is the one case where student names leave your browser during normal use, which is exactly why signing in is optional and why we say so here rather than in a footnote. Your charts are readable only by your own account. Signing out leaves the copies on your device untouched.
  • Analytics (anonymous): We use PostHog, routed through our own domain rather than called directly from your browser, to understand how the product is used in aggregate — pages visited, which features get used, and errors people hit. It is configured without cookies. No fingerprinting, no advertising trackers, no tracking across other sites. It never receives student names or chart contents, because those are never sent to a server at all.

What we don't collect

  • We never require an account. Every part of making a seating chart works signed out, and we do not collect an email address unless you choose to create one.
  • We do not track student names, demographics, or any student-level data.
  • We do not use advertising trackers or third-party analytics with cookies.
  • We do not sell data to any third party, ever.

Student data and FERPA

SeatingSnap is a personal productivity tool for teachers. Signed out, student names you enter are processed entirely within your own browser and no student data is transmitted to or stored on our servers at all — the local-only architecture means chart data never leaves your machine. Signed in, your charts are also stored in our database so they reach your other devices, and student names go with them. If your district has data governance requirements that rule that out, use SeatingSnap without an account: nothing is withheld from you for staying signed out.

Your data rights

  • Delete local data:Clear your browser's site data for SeatingSnap at any time to remove all saved charts.
  • Delete shared charts: Shared chart links expire automatically after 30 days. Contact us at the address below to request earlier deletion.
  • Delete your account: Email us at the address below and we will delete the account and every chart backed up to it. Charts saved on your own devices are yours and are not touched.

Changes to this policy

If we ever make a material change to how we handle data, we'll update the date at the top of this page and note it prominently. We will never introduce data practices that conflict with the principles above without giving users clear notice.
